To date, SJC has farm-to-school programs established on San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island.  Since the islands have separate school districts, each program is unique, with different funding sources, curriculum focus, and connections to local food. For example, the Lopez Island Farm Education (LIFE) program was initially established by a local family foundation, including construction of three large hoop houses for food production for the school lunch program. The foundation also funded a part-time garden and curriculum coordinator.  The program is now funded by the Lopez School District, and future funding is uncertain.  Both the Orcas and San Juan Island Farm to School Programs receive funding from their local community and school foundations.  All of the programs offer exciting and important means to increase nutritional value of school lunches, while also teaching the kids about growing and preparing food.
